Rich Yet Poor

An Arab, losing his way in the desert, was in danger of dying from hunger. At last he found one of the cisterns out of which the camels drink and a little leather bag near it. "God be thanked!" exclaimed he. "Ah, here are some dates or nuts; let me refresh myself." He opened the bag, but only to turn away in disappointment. Alas, they were only pearls, and what good were they to a man who was dying of hunger?

Was this man rich or poor? He was rich yet poor.

"The amount of money you have has got nothing to do with what you earn.. people earning a million dollars a year can have no money and.. People earning $35,000 a year can be quite well off. It's not what you earn, it's what you spend." - Paul Clitheroe

"Becoming wealthy is not a matter of how much you earn, who your parents are, or what you do.. it is a matter of managing your money properly". - Noel Whittaker

Indeed, there are people so poor that the only thing they have is money. May we learn to live richly instead of die with riches!

Beware of Too Much! - Be moderate!

I came across this news item in the BBC News dated Monday August 13, 2007:

"A teenager is taken to hospital after overdosing on espresso coffee while working in a sandwich shop."

Well, is Coffee really that bad? I don't think so. However, overdose of caffeine is dangerous.

Anyway, too much of anything even finest thing can be bad. Too much water and you drown. Too much food and you get sick. Even having too much money can sometimes be worrisome having to worry of thieves breaking into our house or kidnap our love ones. Good works and good health are the exception that I can think of.

"Too much work, too much vacation, too much of any one thing is unsound." - Walter Annenberg

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal" - Matthew 6:19

"If a person studies too much and exhausts his reflective powers, he will be confused, and will not be able to apprehend even that which had been within the power of his apprehension. For the powers of the body are all alike in this respect." - Maimonides

“Unnecessary possessions are unnecessary burdens. If you have them, you have to take care of them! There is great freedom in simplicity of living. It is those who have enough but not too much who are the happiest.” - Peace Pilgrim

“The happiness of too many days is often destroyed by trying to accomplish too much in one day. We would do well to follow a common rule for our daily lives - DO LESS, AND DO IT BETTER.” - Dale E. Turner

What do you think? Do you have any problem knowing how much is too much?

Don't let money become your master

Learn to save money

If you didn't learn to save money before you finished high school, a vital part of your education was wasted.

“A penny saved is a penny earned.” - Benjamin Franklin

The habit of saving is in itself one of the most practical of all educations. it develops discipline, foresight, planning, industry, patience, thinking, and even intelligence.

Save money regularly. If you're average, you'll have some excuse for postponing until you earn more. That's why you're average. Any you'll stay average until you start saving, NO MATTER HOW LITTLE YOU EARN.

In good times, prepare for bad times. In bad times remember the good times. - Ron Kaufman

True Wealth

A man's true wealth is the good he does in this world.

"It is not what we take up, but what we give up, that makes us rich." - Henry Ward Beecher

To be wealthy, aim for more than just money.

You aren't wealthy until you have something money can't buy. - Garth Brooks

If we're not rich, it's our duty to make all the money we can without sacrificing the things more important than money, self-respect, peace of mind, honor, and the rights of others.

We must strive to be excel in making a life and not just making a living - making money.

The Bible gave instructions to the rich in 1 Timothy 6:18-19 - "Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life."

Remember to Serve and Give

“The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving.” - Albert Einstein

He who takes but never gives, may last for years but never lives. Abundant giving brings abundant living. Only one life, 'twill soon be past. Only what's done for others, will last.

Not what we take up, but what we give up, makes us independent.

We make our living by what we get; our life by how we serve and give.

The Bible in Act 20:35 (NKJV) tells us that Jesus said "... It is more blessed to give than to receive."

Wrong way of making Money

Gambling is getting nothing for something - picking our own pocket. It's also habit forming and like cancer, seldom cured. The only remedy: Don't start.

No horse can go as fast as the money you bet on him.

Don't be greedy

There is enough in the world for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed. - Frank Buchman

Needs can be met, greeds never.

The measure of success we achieve is not dependent on how much we possess, but how much we utilize.

A love of quick gain has turned rich men into paupers.
