Learn to feel with your heart!

"Why do we close our eyes when we sleep? When we cry? When we imagine? When we kiss? When we pray? Because the most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen with your eyes, but must be felt with your heart!" - Helen Keller

"Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God." - Matthew 5:8

Forgive and Forget

It is sad that there are those who are willing to spend their life harbouring ill feeling and waiting to seek revenge at any moments. Actually, it costs more to avenge an injury than to forgive. The best way to get even is to forget.

That could be why Confucius says, “Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.”

“Revenge... is like a rolling stone, which, when a man hath forced up a hill, will return upon him with a greater violence, and break those bones whose sinews gave it motion.” - Albert Schweitzer

"Lack of forgiveness is holding on to a burning coal despite the hurt in the hopes that it is burning and hurting someone else." - Kevin Everett FitzMaurice

“We achieve inner health only through forgiveness - the forgiveness not only of others but also of ourselves” - Joshua Loth Liebman

"Forgive all who have offended you, not for them, but for yourself."- Harriet Nelson

"I can forgive, but I cannot forget, is only another way of saying, I will not forgive. Forgiveness ought to be like a canceled note - torn in two, and burned up, so that it never can be shown against one." - Henry Ward Beecher

Forgiving saves the high cost of anger and the higher cost of hating. It is good to forgive; best to forget. In your daily living, you have enough baggage to carry. So why carry the wrong doing of others. Make very sure you stop dwelling on it. Do not hold on to anger, hurt or pain. They steal your energy and keep you from love.

Family Vacation to Penang Hill

“In family life, love is the oil that eases friction, the cement that binds closer together, and the music that brings harmony.” - Eva Burrows

I am down with Flu, Fever and Cough. After medication, I found that I was too tired physically and mentally to come up with any Inspirational post.

Anyway, let me share with you all some photos of my happy moments with my family in the recent trip up to Penang.

On the 15th of October 2007, we went up to Penang Hill also known as Bukit Bendera.

During school holidays and weekends, the funicular train can be very crowded with long queues. Luckily, it was not crowded that day.

The funicular train is a two levels system. Each level has two tram coaches linked by a cable and pulley. The tram coaches will pass each other at a junction. There is a "Middle Station" where passengers alight and transfer to the other level system. Train arrives every 15 minutes. A total of 30 minutes to get to the top of the Penang Hill.

We had reached the top. It was time for photo taking. Well, I was not in this photo because I was the photographer.

At about 830 metres (2,750 feet) from sea level, the temperature on the hilltop is considerably cooler than the city below.

We walked 1.7km to get to Canopy Walk, which is a suspension bridge hanging over the treetops.

From this photo, which was taken using zoom, you can see that I was so far behind my family. I was actually spending time taking photographs of monkeys, squirrels and scenery of the jungle. Well, my wife and children were impatiently waiting for me. It was indeed a long walk.

Finally, we had reached and tried the 200m Canopy Walk. It was indeed cool!

We had to walk 1.7km back after the Canopy Walk. We were exhausted on the way back and we took a short rest.

On the way back, I found a safe place for my camera. Therefore, we took a couple of photos using the camera's self-timer feature.

From the top of the Hill, we can see the Penang Bridge. The bridge is among the longest bridges in the world.

We had a wonderful time for sure!

I hope you have a joyful time with your family too.

Blessings to all readers.
Sam Chan

May Your Wishes Comes True

We all do worry about all kinds of things. Most of the times we worry about things over which we obviously have no control.

The bible tells us in Matthew 6:25 "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

May We Always Have:
Enough happiness to keep us sweet;
Enough trials to keep us strong;
Enough hope to keep us lively;
Enough sorrow to keep us human;
Enough failure to keep us humble;
Enough success to keep us eager;
Enough friends to give us comfort;
Enough wealth to meet our needs;
Enough faith to overcome despair;
Enough enthusiasm to keep us looking forward;
Enough determination to make each day better than yesterday.

Successful people also have problems

Wherever you are, whatever the problem, know that you are not alone. Life indeed is full of problems.

"People who succeed do not have fewer problems than people who fail. The only people without problems are those in cemeteries. It's not what happens to us that separates failures from successes. It is how we perceive it and what we do about what 'happens' that makes the difference." - Anthony Robbins

“The problem is not the problem; the problem is your attitude about the problem

"How you think about a problem is more important than the problem itself - so always think positively." - Norman Vincent Peale

"Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead, focus on what to do next. Spend your energies on moving forward toward finding the answer." - Denis Waitley

"When a problem comes along, study it until you are completely knowledgeable. Then find that weak spot, break the problem apart, and the rest will be easy." - Norman Vincent Peale

From Problem to Profit
About 100 years ago there was a candlestick maker who often stopped at a market and bought a fish for his evening meal. It was wrapped in ordinary paper which became soggy, and the passengers on the street car always complained about the odor. One morning he dipped the paper in molten wax. That day he wrapped his fish in the treated paper. It did not become soggy, and there was no odor. That is how waxed paper was born.

Got a problem? Do not curse it. Look for a cure.

Learn to look at problem differently. Find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. There may be ways to turn a problem into an opportunity for success just like the above story.

Expand your thinking skills

The ability to perceive or think differently is more important than the knowledge gained.” - David Bohm

Thinking is just like any other skills. It can also be learned, practiced, and improved. It is essential to improving writing, reading, listening, and speaking. You can indeed develop your thinking skills.

One of the well-known thinking techniques is the Six Thinking Hats from Edward De Bono. Each hat defines a certain type of thinking. You put on or take off one of these hats to indicate the type of thinking you are using. This allows you to switch from one type of thinking to another.

When done in your group, everybody should wear the same hat at the same time.

Each mode has been identified by a different coloured hat, such that:-
  • The WHITE hat denotes a mode of thinking during which an objective look at data and information is required.
  • The RED hat denotes the mode of thinking associated with feelings, hunches, and intuition.
  • The BLACK hat denotes the mode of thinking associated with caution, judgement, and looking logically at the negative aspects of a problem - often described as the ‘devil’s advocate’ mode of thinking.
  • The YELLOW hat denotes the mode of thinking associated with examining the feasibility and benefits of a given situation, and looking logically at the positive aspects.
  • The GREEN hat denotes the mode of thinking associated with the generation of new ideas, creative and ‘lateral’ thinking.
  • The BLUE hat denotes the mode of thinking associated with the overall control and organisation of the thinking process.

“People mistakenly assume that their thinking is done by their head; it is actually done by the heart which first dictates the conclusion, then commands the head to provide the reasoning that will defend it.” - Anthony de Mello

“It is neither good nor bad, but thinking makes it so.” - William Shakespeare

Try it! Put on the Six Thinking Hats and improve thinking, questioning, and communicating in all areas of your life.

The above mind map was created using iMindmap that I had purchased recently.

Knowing What Matters Most

(Adapted from FL Sam's post; Original Author: Unknown)

The Long Wait
A man came home from work late again, tired and irritated, to find his 5 years old son waiting for him at the door.

"Daddy, may I ask you a question?" "Yeah, sure, what is it?" replied the man. "Daddy, how much do you make an hour?" "That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?" the man said angrily. "I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?" pleaded the little boy. "If you must know, I make $20 an hour." "Oh," the little boy replied, with his head down, looking up, he said, "Dad, may I please borrow $10?"

Angry Reaction
The father was furious, "If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard everyday and don't have time for this childish behavior."

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.

The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?

React Differently On Second Thought
After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn't ask for money very often.

The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.

"Are you asleep, son?" He asked. "No daddy, I'm awake," replied the boy. "I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier" said the man. "It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here's the $10 you asked for."

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. "Oh, thank you daddy!" He yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills.

Angry Again
The man seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father.

"Why do you want more money if you already have some?" the father grumbled. "Because I didn't have enough, but now I do," the little boy replied.

"Daddy, I have $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you."

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness.

Understand The Message From This Story
This is just a reminder to all of us who are working so hard in life. We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent sometime with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Do remember to share that $20 worth of your time with someone you love.

If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days. But the family and friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

How will you paint your life?

Understanding Motivation

“To succeed you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you” - Tony Dorsett

A motive is an impulse that causes a person to act. The more powerful your reasons or motives are to do something, the more motivation you receive to get things done!

Take a look at the following:
  1. A man is asked by his boss to carry a 2 stone bag of sand across a distance of 50 meters. He is not a labour and is unhappy about being asked to do this manual task by his employer. He grumbles about it and tries to put it off. He sees no reason why he should have to do this heavy, unrewarding job. He does it, half-heartedly dragging his feet.
  2. That same man is walking past an accident scene, where a small child, also weighing 2 stone, needs to be carried 50 meters so she can get urgent medical help. He does it immediately and runs all the way!

In the first scenario, the person had no motivation to get the job done. He put it off until the last minute and then when he finally did it, he made sure EVERYONE knew about it. He had no reason to do this boring task, other than trying to keep his boss happy.

However, in the second scenario he was fully motivated - there was a big reason to do the task. He acted immediately and did so with massive amounts of energy. The reason (or motive) is what fired his motivation and gave him the vigour, strength and drive needed in order to successfully get the task completed.

Walking your talk is a great way to motivate yourself. No one likes to live a lie. Be honest with yourself, and you will find the motivation to do what you advise others to do.” - Vince Poscente

“You can motivate by fear. And you can motivate by reward. But both of these methods are only temporary. The only lasting thing is self-motivation.” - Homer Rice

“Motivation is like food for the brain. You cannot get enough in one sitting. It needs continual and regular top ups.” - Peter Davies

A burning desire is the greatest of all motivators. Motivation is inside you, you just need to find it, harness it and use it.

Remember to keep yourself motivated at all times!

Life - The game we should play extremely well

“Life is the only game in which the object of the game is to learn the rules” - Ashleigh Brilliant

Life indeed can be interesting, challenging, and fun. Consider yourself blessed, if you have compelling choices in your life. To move on, you have to make some decisions, experience the consequences, and grow from there.

Life is like a game of tennis; the player who serves well seldom loses” - Anonymous

“To win you've got to stay in the game.” - Claude M. Bristol

The way a man plays a game shows some of his character. The way he loses shows all of it.” - Anonymous

A game is a lot more fun and you will keep playing with greater motivation if you expect some difficulties, obstacles and varieties. Likewise, if all of your attempts succeeded the first time or instantly, life can be really boring!

Learn the rules of life well. Be patient and you can be a better player of the game of life. Life is indeed a constant learning experience. Those who truly understand the purpose and meaning of life can have a wonderful fulfilling life.

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Make very sure you like what you do. To get from where you are to where you want to be, you need to have constant supply of enthusiasm. You can succeed at almost anything for which you has unlimited enthusiasm.

Be careful how you say things

"Words and hearts should be handled with care for words when spoken and hearts when broken are the hardest things to repair."

The way you communicate with others is very important because that's the beginning of relationships building.

If you do not know how to speak, you should remain silent.

Email is also another form of communication. Don't let the speed and ease of sending email blind you to the fact that you will be judged on what you say and how you say it.

"Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another." - Napoleon Hill

Take a look at this story:
It was Alice's second anniversary, and her husband sent her flowers at the office. When he placed the order he told the florist to write "Happy Anniversary, Year Number 2" on the card.

Alice was delighted when the florist arrived, but her joy was heavily clouded by the note on the card. It read "Happy Anniversary. You're Number 2."

"Sharp dagger only wounds the flesh, but a sharp tongue can wound the spirit."

Good communication skills can be learned. They are at the heart of interpersonal skills and the greater your awareness of how it all works, the more effective your communication will be.

We should always think before we speak or write because choices of words can make a lot of difference.

To Succeed Endure All Things

"Victory belongs to the most persevering.” - Napoleon Bonaparte

Recently, I stumbled upon news about a 27-year-old Chinese woman that won the chance to buy a car for the equivalent of 6p by kissing it for more than 24 hours. That is indeed an endurance test or contest.

Likewise, we have to endure to continue blogging. Frankly speaking, I was really exhausted recently. That is one of the reasons why there wasn't any post for this couple of days. I am thankful to many of you that had encouraged me to move on.

I find the following quotes helpful:

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘press on’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” - Calvin Coolidg

"To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it." - Mother Teresa

"The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." - Nelson Mandela

Life is a series of experiences, each of which makes us bigger, even though it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure help us in our marching onward.” - Henry Ford

“The will to persevere is often the difference between failure and success” - David Sarnoff

Indeed, endurance is one of the most difficult disciplines. To prevail, you need to endure. Avoid people that try to belittle your ambition. Choose your environment with care, one that is positive, one that lifts you up and empowers you to achieve your goals.

Do things in the order of importance

Our choices in life are made according to our sense of our own worth” - Kaylan Pickford

With the Internet, we are all overloaded with pages of information to read, and explore. There is no more lacking in term of Information nowadays. However, we need to sift through and takes in quality information. Only then we can make use of the knowledge comprehended in our daily living.

Don't put the cart before the horse. Learn to do things in the order of importance.

Take a look at the following quotes and see what comes to your mind.

“We must be silent before we can listen.
We must listen before we can learn.
We must learn before we can prepare.
We must prepare before we can serve.
We must serve before we can lead.” - William Arthur Ward

"Change before you have to." - Jack Welch

Your actions, and your action alone, determines your worth.”- Evelyn Waugh

Before doing anything, always remember to consider whether it is right or wrong. Do consider seriously what's worth living for? Think before you act and go and do something that is worth doing! Things should be done in the order of importance.
