Keeping Promises

“We must not promise what we ought not, lest we be called on to perform what we cannot” - Abraham Lincoln

Never promise more than you can perform. For every promise, there is price to pay. Just like eggs, oaths are easily broken. Promise only what you can deliver. Then deliver more than you promise.

"The man who promises everything is sure to fulfill nothing, and everyone who promises too much is in danger of using evil means in order to carry out his promises, and is already on the road to perdition." - Carl Jung

"The best way to keep one's word is not to give it." - Napoleon Bonaparte

The Bible tells us in Matthew 5:37,
"But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one."

Great friendships are focused relationships where promises are made and kept. However, most of the time, more is promised than delivered; more is said than done; more is pledged than completed; more is committed than accomplished.

Let's be slow in making promises but always keep them. Do you agree?

ICE campaign

"Knowing who to call can make all the difference"

We all carry our mobile phones with names and numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.

If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) Campaign

The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE" ( In Case Of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as "ICE."

For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!

Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our mobile phones today!!! !

Please forward this. It won't take too many "forwards" before everybody will know about this It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest .

(Source: e-mail)

P/S:
If you support this idea, please create ICE number in your mobile phones and then post this on your blogs, digg this, e-mail this to all your friends or spread it in whatever manner you can think of.

Thank you.

Danger of taking out of context

"A Text without a Context is a Pretext."

It is very important to consider text and speech in its context.

There was a story about a depressed man who had never been a student of the Bible decided that he would begin to read the bible.

He opened the Bible at random and began to read the verses his eyes fell upon. The place he happened to read was the twenty seventh chapter of Matthew where the writer tells about Judas who betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. When he realized what he had done, he took the money back, and the Scriptures say in Matthew 27:5, “So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.”

When the man in our story read that Scripture, he began to feel very bad. He closed the Bible, and the more he thought about this man’s hanging himself, the worse he felt. But he thought, “Maybe if I will read again in the Bible, I will feel better.” He opened the Bible again at random and this time his eyes fell upon Luke 10:37 where Jesus said, “... Go and do likewise.”

Quickly the man in our story closed the Bible and said to himself, “Surely this does not mean for me to do the same as the man who hanged himself.” Now he really felt bad, but he said, “It cannot mean for me to go and do the same.” So he opened the Bible at random again. This time his eyes fell upon 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “... for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.”

By this time our man was thoroughly confused and troubled by what he had read in the Bible, but he returned once more to the book. This time his eyes fell at random on John 13:27, “... "What you are about to do, do quickly,...”

The above story is a bit far out and is intended only as an illustration that will point out the need to rightly divide the word of God.

Here is another illustration:
The Bible contains the sentence:

The fool says in his heart, "There is no God."... - Psalm 14:1

If the context is omitted, this becomes:
There is no God.

Let us make very sure that we listen carefully and read the context of any spoken or written text so as not to misrepresent any speakers or authors. This could spark off misunderstanding. Thus, be very careful with words.

Stop the Abuse

"The greater the power, the more dangerous the abuse." - Edmund Burke

Burglaries, rapes, homicides, etc. are becoming very rampant in Malaysia lately.

Child Abuse
Nurin Jazlin, an eight year old girl went missing on Aug 20, 2007 after she went to a night market by herself near her house. On Sept 17, 2007, her body was found stuffed in a sports bag at a three-storey shop lot. A post mortem showed that she had been sexually assaulted.

Nurin is among the 17 children under the age of nine that are still on the police's list of missing persons.

It is everyone's duty to stop all this abuse. To fight crime, closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras were installed and more will be installed in crime-prone areas to improve security and safety according to our city council.

The requirement for video security has indeed become very important; to identify the attackers and/or victims should they be caught on tape. The presence of a surveillance camera might even prevent crimes from happening.

Video surveillance is indeed useful when utilized in public locations such as shopping malls, corners and parking lots.

Abuse of Technology
However, we need to be wary when video surveillance devices are easily available.

With technological progress, hidden camera surveillance gear has become cheaper, smaller and easier to use. We have to stop the possibility of unscrupulous landlords or hotel owners from installing hidden camera which can now be even in the form of a Down View Smoke Detector.

The government authority needs to regulate the purchase of such devices. What Do You Think?

Let's do our part to stop all form of abuses.

Leaders got to know their roles well

"A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." - John C. Maxwell

Everybody has their roles

No matter whether you are a parent, an eldest in the family, a manager or one of the members in a team, what you do, how you act and perform your duty are very important.

Your children, siblings, workers or your colleagues could be watching very closely and might just follow your examples. Thus, make every effort to find out and know your roles well so that you could show good examples.

Leaders roles
“A leader's role is to raise people's aspirations for what they can become and to release their energies so they will try to get there.” - David R. Gergen

“True leadership must be for the benefit of the followers, not the enrichment of the leaders.” - Robert Townsend

“The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.” - Ralph Nader

Take a look at this true story:

At the funeral
One of my young preacher friends was officiating at the funeral of a war veteran. The dead man's military friends wished to have a part in the service at the funeral home, so they requested the pastor to lead them down to the casket, stand with them for a solemn moment of remembrance, and then lead them out through the side door. This he proceeded to do, but unfortunately the effect was somewhat marred when he picked the wrong door. The result was that they marched with military precision into a broom closet, in full view of the mourners, and had to beat a hasty retreat covered with confusion.

This true story illustrates a cardinal rule or two. First, if you're going to lead, make sure you know where you're going. Second, if you're going to follow, make sure that you are following someone who knows what he is doing!

(Extracted from this source; Author: Shelton Cole)

Know your roles
You can't do your job well if you don't know your own role. Find out or ask your supervisor if necessary. If you are a leader, do take note that it is difficult to inspire others to accomplish what you haven't been willing to try.

Life's Journey

Life is a journey and we determine our destination, what kind of road we will take to get there, and how happy we are when we get there.

Too often we go through life on autopilot without even knowing. We just let each day pass like the one before it. Well, since we could never start life all over again, once we have reached old age, we might look back on life with regrets.

“If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we are not really living.” - Gail Sheehy

"Time is a companion that goes with us on a journey. It reminds us to cherish each moment, because it will never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we have lived." - Jean Luc Picard

“If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness and fears.” - Cesare Pavese

In your life journey, your success and happiness depends partly on your choice of friends, companions, associates, and co-workers. When possible, choose wisely.

“It is better to travel alone than with a bad companion” - African Proverb

Happiness is a way of travel. Make very sure you live life fullest. Start living if you still haven't and it is time to switch off autopilot mode.

Living with Integrity

“Integrity is what we do, what we say, and what we say we do” - Don Galer

Below is a conversation between a store owner with his new employee:

"My boy," said the store owner to his new employee, "Wisdom and Integrity are essential to the retail business.

By 'Integrity' I mean if you promise a customer something, you have got to keep that promise even if it means we lose money."

"And what," asked the teenager, "is Wisdom?"
"That," answered the boss, "is not making any stupid promises."

50th Years of Independence

Logo by: Nor Azian A. Hasan

Today, Malaysia is celebrating 50th years of independence.

May all Malaysians continue to live in peace and harmony and have a fair and equal chance of success.

A happy birthday to Malaysia!

Some Questions for Malaysians to ponder
  • Do you appreciate the meaning of Merdeka?
  • Are we more united after these 50 years?
  • Is everyone really being treated fairly?
  • Are we experiencing a brain drain? What are the causes?
  • Is there really a fair opportunity to education, employment and business?
  • Why is there still discrimination?
“Any discrimination, like sharp turns in a road, becomes critical because of the tremendous speed at which we are traveling into the high-tech world of a service economy.” - Clarence Thomas

"Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing." - 1 Peter 3:8-9 (NKJV)

Be a great teacher

Nowadays, not many want to be a teacher. Besides, some teachers are not doing a good job in school. Many school teachers prefer to give their best effort in tuition class. That’s why tuition centre has become so popular nowadays. Anyway, this world really needs a lot of great teachers.

Different kind of teachers
"The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." - William Arthur Ward

Elements of Great Teaching
"A teacher who is attempting to teach without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn is hammering on cold iron." - Horace Mann

"Teachers who cannot keep students involved and excited for several hours in the classroom should not be there." - John Roueche

“A wise teacher makes learning a joy.” - Proverb

"Professors known as outstanding lecturers do two things; they use a simple plan and many examples." - W. McKeachie

Values and Price to pay
"Good teachers are costly, but bad teachers cost more." - Bob Talbert

"No man can be a good teacher unless he has feelings of warm affection toward his pupils and a genuine desire to impart to them what he himself believes to be of value." - Bertrand Russell

He who ceases to learn cannot adequately teach. A good teacher is one whose students surpass him and makes him increasingly less necessary. The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book.

Do you have great teachers? What do you like about your teachers?

Avoid making comparison with others

In this world, everybody play an important role.

There is a reason for everything. Have you wonder what will happen when everybody become doctors, professors, engineers, or businessmen? Where do you get your food if nobody is willing to do the planting? Who will then serve you in restaurant? Who will then wash the public toilet or collect the garbage?

“If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself” - Max Ehrman

Take a look at the story below:

Crackpot

A water bearer in China had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots of water to his house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments for which it was made, but the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.

After 2 years of what the cracked pot perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes my water to leak out all the way back to your house." The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."

Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.

Have a great day, accept people for the way they are.

Tips for Your Career

Your career will make your days sweet or sour. So you should take plenty of time to choose wisely.

In the beginning

Select that career which, while you are building it, is also building you.

The best career advice given to the young is: "Find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it." - Katherine Whitehorn

"No man can succeed in a line of endeavor which he does not like." - Napoleon Hill

When you are working, always be mindful of the following:

  • Arrogance is the quicksand of success.
  • You cannot be anything if you want to be everything.
  • Of all the things you wear, your expression is the most important.
  • Right efforts will inevitably bring about right results.
"To be successful, the first thing to do is fall in love with your work." - Sister Mary Lauretta

“The difference between a job and a career is the difference between forty and sixty hours a week” - Robert Frost

"Sometimes you learn more from failure than you do from success, and in some ways it's better to have failure at the beginning of your career, or your life." - Michael Crawford

Vacation Time

"A vacation should be just long enough for the boss to miss you, and not long enough for him to discover how well he can get along without you."

Retiring Time

"When you cease to make a contribution, you begin to die." - Eleanor Roosevelt

"The best time to start thinking about your retirement is before the boss does."

We all have to learn to take control of our own career. Let's work joyfully and peacefully. There was a saying we work to live and not live to work. Do you agree?

The Path to Greatness

All of us have the potential of greatness, waiting to be developed. However, till we have models greater than ourselves, we seldom improve. Thus, we need to adopt a few.

The only fortune worth finding is finding - then developing our rich - inner talents - those seed of greatness that God plants inside every one of us, awaiting our discovery.

“Responsibility is the price of greatness.” - Winston Churchill

“Greatness is not found in possessions, power, position, or prestige. It is discovered in goodness, humility, service, and character.” - William Arthur Ward

"Deeds, not stones, are the true monuments of the great." - John L. Motley

“Man's greatness lies in his power of thought.” - Blaise Pascal

You are great man if you leave the world better than you found it. Put your heart and soul into everything you do, including the little things and that is the path to greatness. However, this road is not always smooth. You'll need a lot of courage, persistence, and great attitude in this journey.

Well, are you still on the path to greatness?

Understanding Leadership

"Managers have employees, leaders have followers." - Workplace 2000

Although all skills are learnable, it is not easy to be a good leader. Good leaders are followed chiefly because people trust and respect them, rather than the skills they possess.

Management skills are important but leadership relies more on qualities such as integrity, honesty, humility, courage, commitment, sincerity, passion, confidence, positivity, wisdom, determination, compassion and sensitivity.

I find the following passage very thought provoking:

Leadership has to do with direction. Management has to do with the speed, coordination and logistics in going in that direction. The Workers are chopping their way through the jungle. The Managers are coordinating, making sure the tools are sharp, etc. The Leaders climb a tree and shout Wrong jungle!! The Managers shout back Be quiet! We're making progress!

Below are some quotes that can give us some hints of those behaviors of effective leadership.

"A good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those who are doing well to do even better." - Jim Rohn

"The best leader is the one who has sense enough to pick good people to do what he/she wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it." - Theodore Roosevelt

"The level of morale is a good barometer of how each of your people is experiencing your leadership." - Danny Cox

"Every leader needs to look back once in awhile to make sure he has followers." - Kouzes and Posner

"Be enthusiastic as a leader. You can't light a fire with a wet match!"

"Managers are people who do things right; leaders are people who do the right thing." - Warren Bennis

"Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success, leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall." - Stephen Covey

"The most vital task of the leader is to motivate, inspire, empower and encourage the team's primary resource -- the unlimited, creative human potential to find better ways." - Dr. Lewis Losoncy

Skills alone do not make leaders - style and behavior do. To be a good leader means that you can inspire others to follow your example, willingly and cheerfully. What do you think? Do you agree? Do you have a great leader that you are following?

"Do not worry if others do not understand you.
Instead worry if you do not understand others." - Confucius

How To Work Better

“Knowing a great deal is not the same as being smart; intelligence is not information alone but also judgment, the manner in which information is collected and used” - Dr. Carl Sagan

Remember to put in extra effort and work smart. There is no point of telling your boss how hard you work. Tell your boss how much you get done.

Let's take a look at this story that illustrate this point:

Chuan and Jing joined a wholesale company together just after graduation. Both worked very hard.

After several years, the boss promoted Jing to sales executive but Chuan remained a sales rep. One day Chuan could not take it anymore, tender resignation to the boss and complained the boss did not value hard working staff, but only promoted those who flattered him.

The boss knew that Chuan worked very hard for the years, but in order to help Chuan realise the difference between him and Jing, the boss asked Chuan to do the following. Go and find out anyone selling water melon in the market? Chuan returned and said yes. The boss asked how much per kg?

Chuan went back to the market to ask and returned to inform boss $12/kg. Boss told Chuan, I will ask Jing the same question? Jing went, returned and said, "Boss, only one person selling water melon. $12/kg, $100 for 10kg, he has inventory of 340 melons. On the table 58melons, every melon weighs about 15 kg, bought from the South two days ago, they are fresh and red, good quality.

Chuan was very impressed and realised the difference between himself and Jing. He decided not to resign but to learn from Jing.

The moral of the story:

A more successful person is more observant, think more and understand in depth. For the same matter, a more successful person sees several years ahead, while you see only tomorrow. The difference between a year and a day is 365 times, how could you win? Think! How far have you seen ahead in your life? How thoughtful in depth are you?

“Today, and every day, deliver more than you are getting paid to do. The victory of success will be half won when you learn the secret of putting out more than is expected in all that you do. Make yourself so valuable in your work that eventually you will become indispensable. Exercise your privilege to go the extra mile, and enjoy all the rewards you receive. You deserve them!” - Og Mandino

"Men who do things without being told draw the most wages" - Edwin H. Stuart

Be always willing to give that extra effort! You can choose to look forward to the day, or choose to complain. It's your choice!

Boss versus Leader

Being a leader is very different than being the boss.

The boss drives his men; The leader inspires them.
The boss depends on
authority; The leader on good will.
The boss evokes
fear; The leader radiates love.

The boss says "
I"; The leader says "We".
The boss shows
who is wrong; The leader shows what is wrong.
The boss
knows how it is done; The leader shows how it is done.

The boss
assigns the tasks; The leader sets the pace.
The boss says, "
Get here on time"; The leader begins on time.
The boss makes work
drudgery, The leader makes it interesting.
The boss says "
GO"; The leader says "LET'S GO.

Well, who do you prefer to be? A boss or a leader?

Working Together Works

Vision Affects Your Attitude

This post is dedicated to my friend Jennifer at Goodness Graciousness for her remarkable meme titled "Hold the Vision".

The world is in the hands of us all. We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools. If we only listen!, I envision in years to come, people of all nations can blend together harmoniously. Then, major problems such as pestilence, war, famine, intolerance will fade away. All people can then look forward to a clear bright future!
